PS 971 and Center for Family Life, CFL are partners to support all families. Center for Family Life is a neighborhood-based family and social services organization with deep roots in Sunset Park, Brooklyn.

Since 1978, CFL has grown with the Sunset Park neighborhood, responding to emerging needs with effective programs in counseling, employment, education, the arts and recreation. Today, the services engages more than 16,000 people each year at 11 community locations.

What does CFL offer our families at PS 971?

Employment Services Program:

  • Job readiness preparation (resume and interview assistance)
  • Employment Counseling
  • Job placement
  • ESOL classes
  • Computer classes
  • Worker cooperative development

Cooperative Business Development Program: 

The CFL Cooperative Development Program (CDP) organizes community members to create worker-owned cooperative businesses with the mission of economic and social justice. 

Family Counseling Program:

  • Family counseling
  • Immigrant parent support groups
  • Mental health counseling
  • Know Your Rights Workshops (led by our ActionNYC team)

Community Services Program:

  • Food pantry with emergency food packages including dry and canned goods and fresh and frozen fruits and vegetables. Hours of operation vary!
  • Benefits Access Program (Formerly Single Stop) offers benefits screenings and application assistance for SNAP/Food Stamps and WIC, health insurance, unemployment, housing, disability, and other benefits.
  • Healthcare Representatives provide assistance with healthcare programs like Qualified Health Plan, Child Health Plus and Medicare.
  • Advocacy Clinic provides assistance with issues such as public benefits, healthcare, housing, utilities, taxes and immigration.
  • Legal services for immigration, family, housing, bankruptcy, and education.
  • Financial counseling, including credit reports, credit counseling and debt management, reduction in credit card payments, settlements, student loan financing, and identity theft.
  • Self-Employed Tax Program (SETP) offers year-round free resources including specialized tax prep, workshops and group sessions, one-on-one consultations, toolkits and more. If you work for yourself as a freelancer, gig worker, or small business owner, you need to file taxes annually and make estimated payments quarterly. Our Tax Preparers are here to help.
  • Free VITA tax-filing services are available to families with incomes of $85,000/year or less in 2023 and individuals with incomes of $59,000/year or less in 2023. In-person services are available by appointment only beginning January 24, 2024.
